My love for soap making started in my teens. After graduation, my family and I went on a vacation to Silver Dollar City in Branson Missouri. I saw the soap maker there and thought, “That would be so cool to do!” I later discovered that’s how most soap makers get started– by just thinking, “How cool! I want to learn how to make soap, but I don’t want to hurt myself using lye.”
A couple of years later, I got a job as a florist and it just happened that they made homemade soap there… the old fashioned way, by stirring it for an HOUR! Guess who got to stir! 🙂 After that job, stick blenders were invented. Since then, the process has been shortened and you can make homemade soap in just a few short minutes!
I took a break for a while, but the love of soap making kept beckoning me back! After having 4 kids and finding myself needing a hobby to divert myself from the chaos, I am back at it again and I LOVE making soap!
What’s even more fun is I love teaching soap! I always wanted to be that lady at the soap booth at Silver Dollar City but, honestly, the thought of standing over a hot open fire stirring a big kettle for 3 hours in the 110-degree heat and high humidity just does not appeal to me and isn’t good for my fibromyalgia!
I’ve been making soap Live for our viewers at Living On A Dime for a while now, and everyone is loving it! I get to teach soap in my nice air-conditioned home to thousands of people each week and I’ve even taught several people in person!
